On September 12, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan and Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett jointly announced Mylett’s retirement from policing and departure from the Akron Police Department, effective January 1, 2024. After a national search and public engagement process, Mylett joined the Department in August of 2021. As Chief of the Akron Police Department, Mylett commands the Department’s 454 officers and supervisors, 51 Reserve officers, and 96 civilians (including dispatch personnel) that serve Akron’s nearly 200,000 citizens.
The City of Akron, in coordination with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), invites the public to provide comments regarding the proposed rehabilitation of the Bowery Street bridge in Downtown Akron. The Bowery Street bridge spans over the Ohio Canal and Cascade Parking Plaza. The project includes partial bridge deck replacement, and replacement of the existing sidewalks, parapet, and fencing. Additional work includes bridge approach and abutment replacement.

This morning, August 30 at 5am, a group of 5 from the Akron Fire Department joined others from Cuyahoga Falls Fire and Green Fire as they departed to Leesville, Louisiana to answer an Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) call for help. The crew of 13 is traveling to Leesville to help man their fire stations while the crews from Leesville are combatting wildfires across Louisiana.

On August 3, the City of Akron released a draft riparian setback ordinance for public comment. The setbacks are designed to increase protections for the areas of land along river and stream banks. Protecting riparian areas and reducing the impacts of runoff serves to protect property from erosion and flooding, filters water pollutants from our waterways, and maintains the biological integrity of both the aquatic and land habitat for wildlife.

Due to forecasted high temperatures, Mayor Horrigan has announced that the City of Akron will extend hours at four community “cooling centers” on Friday, July 28. The four community centers (Lawton, Mason Park, Patterson Park, and Summit Lake) will be open from 8:30 AM to 9:00 PM. Summer camps at those locations will still proceed as usual. All other community centers are also open to the public during their normal business hours and will have water available for anyone in need. National Night Out (NNO) is an annual community-building campaign, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, that promotes police-community relations and neighborhood unity.
