The City of Akron, in coordination with the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), invites the public to provide comments regarding the proposed rehabilitation of the Bowery Street bridge in Downtown Akron. The Bowery Street bridge spans over the Ohio Canal and Cascade Parking Plaza. The project includes partial bridge deck replacement, and replacement of the existing sidewalks, parapet, and fencing. Additional work includes bridge approach and abutment replacement.
Environmental studies are ongoing; however, impacts are unlikely. No right-of-way is anticipated to be needed for the project. Relocation of some utilities may be required.
A vehicular detour is anticipated during construction. West bound vehicles will be rerouted down S. Main Street, to State Street, to W. Bowery Street and reverse for east bound vehicles. Temporary walkways around the work area will be provided for pedestrians, if needed. All access to properties will be maintained throughout construction. Construction is currently scheduled to begin fall of 2024 and will last approximately 24 months.
The City and ODOT welcome your questions and comments. Issues you may wish to comment on include, but are not limited to, the effect of the project on local residents, air quality, the local economy, floodplains, and historic or cultural resources. To ensure your comments may be considered during project development, please submit them no later than October 8, 2023, via the contact information below.
Public participation is solicited without regard to race, color, sex, age, national origin, or disability.
