Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes discusses youth violence risks and celebrates local initiatives

Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes, a U.S. Congress member representing Ohio's 13th district since 2023, has shared insights and events on her Twitter account. Her recent posts address issues related to youth violence, educational opportunities for young women, and the celebration of National Nurses Week.

On May 8, 2025, Rep. Sykes highlighted the risk factors associated with youth violence in a tweet stating that "Mental health and addiction challenges including high emotional distress, involvement with drugs, alcohol, or tobacco, learning disorders, and antisocial beliefs and attitudes are all risk factors linked with youth violence." She emphasized the importance of increasing behavioral and mental health support as a means to address these issues.

Later that day at 19:55 UTC, Rep. Sykes expressed her enthusiasm for the opening of a new STEM Center by the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio (GSNEO). In her post she mentioned that "The new @GSNEO STEM Center of Excellence will build resilience, critical thinking, and confidence in girls and young women across Northeast Ohio." She was honored to attend the grand opening event.

In another tweet posted on May 8 at 21:39 UTC during National Nurses Week, Rep. Sykes acknowledged the dedication of nurses by saying "Nurses provide skilled and compassionate care and this #NationalNursesWeek we honor their devotion to the health and wellbeing of their patients." She extended gratitude towards nurses for their service.

Emilia Sykes was born in Akron, Ohio in 1986. She graduated from Kent State University with a BA degree before earning a JD from the University of Florida. Prior to serving in Congress starting in 2023 after replacing Tim Ryan, she served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2015 to 2022.
