Cliff Battles died on April 28, 1981. He was born in Akron in 1910. He played football at Kenmore High School and lettered in five sports at West Virginia Wesleyan. He led the NFL in rushing as a rookie in 1932. He was the first NFL player to rush for over 200 yards in one game. He helped Washington win the 1937 NFL title. After six seasons, he retired over a salary dispute. He coached at Columbia and in the AAFC. Battles was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968.
