The University of Akron (UA) has honored Alfred V Ciraldo, M.D. with an honorary degree at its winter commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2022.

An alumnus of UA, Alfred V. Ciraldo earned his bachelor’s degree in biology in 1976. He went on to graduate from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1979 and complete an internship and residency in general surgery at Akron City Hospital (now Summa Health System). He became a board-certified general surgeon in 1984, and established his longstanding practice,  based at Summa Health Medical Group Summit Surgical Associates.

In 2013, Ciraldo was appointed to the UA Board of Trustees by Gov. John Kasich for a nine-year term that ended July 1, 2022. During his tenure, Ciraldo served the Board as vice chair; chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee, the Rules Committee, the Nominating Committee and the Personnel and Compensation Committee; and as a member on numerous standing and special committees, including those which selected President Gary Miller and helped to navigate the University through the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout his term, he applied thoughtful diligence to consideration of matters before the Board, especially with regard to those impacting students and their families.

Ciraldo has committed his time and talent as an esteemed physician to worthy causes dedicated to improving the lives of others, including providing surgical care via annual overseas mission trips and sponsoring and participating in local Susan G. Komen Annual Race for the Cure fund-raising events for breast cancer research.

Ciraldo resides in Akron and enjoys traveling and visiting his adult children and grandchildren.
