On Jan. 16, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik has launched a new app to support the Mayor’s 3-1-1 Action Center. The app, powered by Rock Solid, is entitled “MyAkron311” and is available for free on all Apple or Android devices in the app store. After downloading, residents can create a profile, enter a service request, look up timely city information, and set up notifications specific to their address such as trash/recycling collection reminders. The app improves the functionality and accessibility of the Mayor’s 3-1-1 Action Center.
The City of Akron is developing plans for several roadway safety improvements on North Main Street between the All-America Bridge and the High-Level Bridge over the Gorge (northern city limit). This safety project is a result of years of study and public engagement, beginning with Akron Better Block in 2015. Akron is now seeking public comment on the project both in person and online here.
On Jan. 11, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Akron Public Schools (APS) Superintendent Dr. Michael Robinson Jr. are jointly announcing a collaborative process to update the city’s School Travel Plan. The School Travel Plan is a document designed to improve safety for children (K-12) walking and biking to school by identifying needed improvements in a 2-mile radius of each of the 46 public schools. The city will use this Plan to apply for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funding from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).
On Jan. 12, Mayor Malik announced the City of Akron will extend hours at Summit Lake Community Center (380 W Crosier St.) from Sunday, Jan. 14 through Tuesday, Jan. 16 to provide a warming center for residents in need. Summit Lake Community Center will be open between 8:00am and 7:00pm January 14-January 16. All other City of Akron community centers will be open during their normal business hours for the holiday weekend.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik is inviting the Akron community to join him for a townhall this Thursday, January 11 from 6-7:30pm at Garfield CLC (1326 Brown St.). The first townhall of the Malik administration will focus on the search for the next leader of the Akron Police Department. The meeting will allow time for residents to fill out the community survey to provide input into the process and will have a significant portion dedicated to Q&A. Speakers and guests for the event include Mayor Malik, Chief of Strategy Nanette Pitt, Ohio Senator Vernon Sykes, Retired Akron Police Department Captain Sylvia Trundle, and transition co-chair and Senior Pastor at St. Ashworth Temple Robert Dejournett.

The Malik administration continues to fill out with more key appointments. Today, Mayor Malik is announcing Suzie Graham Moore is joining the administration in the role of Director of Economic Development and Sean Vollman is staying on as Deputy Director of Economic Development. Kyle Julien is coming in as the new Director of Planning and LaTonda Mobley will remain as Great Streets Administrator.
Today, the Akron Bicentennial Commission and Mayor Shammas Malik are announcing that the Commission is forming a not-for-profit corporation, ‘Akron200 Inc.,’ in order to receive funds and distribute grants to neighborhood groups that are planning celebrations as part of Akron’s Bicentennial. After consultation with the Mayor, the Commission has appointed Mark Greer as Executive Director to implement plans for the city’s 200th anniversary.
This morning, Mayor Shammas Malik is announcing additional key appointments to his Cabinet and administration. Deborah Matz is joining as Director of Law beginning Jan. 16 while Brian Angeloni and Michael Defibaugh are being promoted to Deputy Law Directors. Angeloni will fill the role of Acting Director of Law until Matz begins, and Defibaugh will be Acting Director of Human Resources (HR) until that position is filled. Mayor Malik is also welcoming Lauren Marsh from the Together for Akron transition team as Assistant to the Chief of Staff, and Chief Natko is continuing in his current role as head of the Akron Fire Department.
In the final announcement before Mayor-Elect Malik is sworn in as Akron’s 63rd Mayor, he is welcoming three more Cabinet members to the administration as well as an additional appointed position. Mayor-Elect Malik is proud to announce Esther Thomas as Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Casey Shevlin in the newly created role of Director of Sustainability and Resiliency, Stephanie Marsh as Director of Communications, and Patricia Porter in an appointed role as Digital Media Assistant.
On Dec. 28, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan has announced the federal court overseeing the city’s Consent Decree program, has granted the city’s third amendment.
On Dec. 27, the Together For Akron Transition Team announced important updates for the Ceremonial Swearing-in and Community Celebration happening on January 6th. The Community Celebration has reached capacity and is no longer accepting registrations but the team is releasing a run of show for the Swearing-In Ceremony which is still open for more attendees.
Akron Mayor-Elect Shammas Malik is announcing three strategists who will join the incoming administration to work on key priorities and initiatives based on the Together for Akron plan.
On Dec. 19, incoming Akron Mayor Shammas Malik is announcing six additional members of his new administration. Chris Ludle will be staying on in his current position as Director of Public Service, Steve Fricker will also retain his role as Director of Finance, and Frank Williams will continue to serve as Director of Labor Relations. Additionally, Eufrancia Lash and James Aitken will stay on as Deputy Service Directors and Michael Wheeler will remain the Deputy Director of Finance.
In September, current Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan and Akron Police Chief Steve Mylett jointly announced the Chief’s planned departure at the end of the year and his retirement from policing after 35 years of dedicated service. Today, Mayor-Elect Shammas Malik has announced that beginning Jan. 1, 2024, current Akron Deputy Chief Brian Harding will take over as Acting Chief while a nationwide search is conducted for Chief Mylett’s replacement. The search will prioritize public engagement and community input and is expected to take three to five months. The search firm will begin soliciting candidates in the new year, and both internal and external candidates will be considered for the position.
On Dec. 21, Akron Mayor-Elect Shammas Malik is announcing the first members of his new Cabinet. Brittany Grimes Zaehringer has been appointed as Chief of Staff and Nanette Pitt has been appointed as Chief of Strategy. These two co-equal roles will directly report to Mayor Malik, forming a core executive leadership team.

On Dec. 5, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan and Police Chief Steve Mylett are announcing a new Akron Police Department initiative to help victims of hate crimes and harassment receive help. The Safe Place Program is a unique partnership with the business community that allows victims fleeing a threat to quickly and easily recognize where they can go for assistance. Businesses and organizations that participate will place a decal at their entrances signifying to those in need that this location has dedicated itself as a safe place for hate crime victims to receive help quickly.
