On Dec. 4, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan has released the Reconnecting Our Community Phase 1 Innerbelt Report compiled by spatial justice activist and city contractor, Liz Ogbu. This report documents the history of the Innerbelt, the community engagement work of the Reconnecting Our Community initiative over the last two years, and recommendations for short and long term-term opportunities.
This week, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) released the 2023 Municipal Equality Index (MEI). Once again, the City of Akron under Mayor Horrigan’s leadership has earned a perfect 100. View Akron’s scorecard here.
The City of Akron plans to hire twenty-five seasonal snowplow drivers for the 2023/2024 Snow and Ice Removal Program. Snowplow drivers are responsible for clearing snowfall and de-icing over 829 centerline miles of roadway with over 1,919 lane miles covering almost 122 million square feet. They play a critical role in ensuring that residents can get to their destinations safely and efficiently during inclement weather.
On Nov. 15, the City of Akron Fire Department held a ceremony to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program here in the city. The luncheon, held at the Local 330 Fire Union Hall, was well attended by current and former firefighters and elected officials. The Akron Fire Department Emergency Medical Services program began on November 15, 1978 with a volunteer crew of 25 paramedics. Today, the program maintains 153 paramedics throughout the city.
Recently, three Akron Police Department captains graduated from prestigious and well-regarded policing programs. Captain Michael Rinn graduated as a member of the 287th session of the FBI National Academy. Captain David Laughlin and Captain Agostino Micozzi both graduated from Class #548 of the School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) at Northwestern University.
Recently, Akron Deputy Mayor Marco Sommerville was interviewed by The HistoryMakers, which is known as the digital repository of the Black Experience. HistoryMakers (www.thehistorymakers.org) is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit research and educational institution. With the Library of Congress serving as their official repository, The HistoryMakers collection has grown to over 11,000 hours of testimony.
On Nov. 9, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan announced a restructuring of the city’s water rates to take place beginning in 2024. The updates include significantly reducing the current declining block rate system which favors large use water customers, implementing a fixed infrastructure charge based on meter size, and adding a small increase to water rates which have not been raised since 2012. These updates will fund much-needed investment to Akron’s aging drinking water infrastructure. The City is also launching a brand new water affordability program for Akron residents.
Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan will honor a group of veterans long-forgotten for their service in the American Revolution, in a ceremony Monday, November 13, at 9:30am, at the Middlebury Cemetery, 1245 Newton Street on Akron’s east side.

On Nov. 1, the City of Akron has unveiled the new and improved City of Akron website at www.AkronOhio.gov. The new site features interactive search functionality, quick links to the most popular pages, translation into dozens of languages, an accessibility menu, and more. Additionally, a new 3-1-1 platform powered by Rock Solid is launching today for citizen service requests.
The City of Akron leaf removal will begin Monday, October 30 in Ward 5. Each ward takes multiple days to complete. Signs will be posted in the various wards prior to pick-up dates. We’d like to remind residents not to rake their leaves into the street until the day before their scheduled pick-up. Crews will be out training this week but that will not impact the schedule.
On October 12, Mayor Horrigan and other city officials broke ground at Patterson Park Community Center (800 Patterson Ave.) to celebrate the beginning of construction on the center renovation. After renovations, the community center will boast new meeting rooms, a multipurpose room, game room, art/gardening room, a new outdoor playground, and more. Construction is expected to total $7.8M and be complete by late 2024/early 2025.
The City of Akron Water Supply Bureau has lifted the precautionary boil water advisory issued for all customers along the Akron Peninsula Road corridor north of Bath Road. This included some Akron Water customers located in Cuyahoga Falls and Boston Township. Water testing completed over the past 18 hours has confirmed the drinking water is safe.
All municipal offices will be closed on Monday, October 9, 2023, in observance of Italian-American Heritage and Culture Day. On June 29, 2020, Akron City Council passed Resolution No. 184-2020 recognizing and declaring the second Monday in October as Italian-American Heritage and Culture Day in the City of Akron to honor the history, culture, and contributions of the Italian-American Community to Akron and Summit County.
This year, the City of Akron’s annual celebration of Halloween will take place on Saturday, October 28. Akron residents who wish to participate in “Trick or Treat Night” may show their support by turning on their porch lights between the hours of 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. that evening. Akron police patrols will pay special attention to children and families walking city neighborhoods to promote a safe and successful celebration for all.
On September 21, Mayor Horrigan held a press conference to launch a glass drop off recycling program throughout the City of Akron. The purple recycling bins will be available in five locations: Diamond Crystal Ballfield (2175 Edwin Ave.), Akron’s Dog Park (499 Memorial Parkway), Behind Spaghetti Warehouse (510 S. Main), Goodyear Heights Metroparks (1950 Eastwood Ave.), and Goodpark Golf Course (530 Nome Ave.). The city will accept all clean food and beverage glass bottles in the recycling bins. Glass will NOT be accepted in curbside recycling carts.
