Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes, who represents Ohio’s 13th district in the U.S. Congress, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing the anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid as well as ongoing debates about healthcare policy.

On July 30, 2025, Rep. Sykes marked a milestone for two major federal health programs by stating, "As we recognize the 60 year anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, Rep. Sykes celebrates the impact that these programs have had on our nation. Despite what Republicans have done to rip benefits away from Americans, Rep. Sykes understands that Americans cannot afford to go".

Later that same day, she responded publicly to comments made by Vice President Kamala Harris regarding local communities in her home state: "Rep. Sykes statement in response to @VP's insults of Akron and Canton."

Continuing her focus on healthcare issues, Rep. Sykes shared details about a recent visit with constituents: "This week, Rep. Sykes spoke with seniors directly to hear about how Republicans’ Medicaid and Medicare cuts will negatively impact them while visiting Sutliff Senior Apartments in Cuyahoga Falls. These members of our community rely on Medicaid and Medicare to get the care they" (July 31, 2025).

Rep. Sykes has represented Ohio’s 13th District since replacing Tim Ryan in 2023; she previously served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2015 to 2022. Born in Akron in 1986 and currently residing there at age 37, she is an alumna of Kent State University and holds a law degree from the University of Florida.
