Ohio Rep Emilia Sykes announces community conversation and mental health legislation updates

Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Ohio's 13th district, shared several updates on her legislative activities and upcoming events through social media posts dated May 9, 2025. Sykes, who has been serving in Congress since replacing Tim Ryan in 2023, previously served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2015 to 2022.

On May 9, Sykes announced an upcoming "Community Conversation" scheduled for May 28 in Fairlawn. The event will focus on discussions about Medicaid, Social Security, and protecting seniors' benefits. In her message, she emphasized her commitment to safeguarding constituents' hard-earned benefits.

Later that day, she invited followers to join her at noon on Instagram Live for a discussion about the Mental Health Improvement Act. According to Sykes' post, this act aims to increase the number of behavioral health professionals and improve access to mental health services.

In another post on the same day, Sykes highlighted that nearly half of all Americans experience a behavioral health issue during their lifetime. She underscored the need for quality mental health resources within her community in Ohio's 13th district by leading the reintroduction of the Mental Health Improvement Act. Her statement reiterated her commitment to enhancing access to these crucial services.

Emilia Sykes was born in Akron, Ohio in 1986 and currently resides there. She holds a BA from Kent State University and a JD from the University of Florida.
