Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan announced that the city is now accepting applications for the position of Police Officer through March 9, 2023.

Apply today by visiting www.governmentjobs.com/careers/akron.

“Our police officers serve a crucial role in our communities,” said Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. “At a time when building up trust between our residents and our officers is more important than ever, it’s imperative that we recruit and hire officers that reflect the community they serve. We are looking for highly qualified applicants who have a passion for service and for the Akron community.”

The exam is planned for March 18 and 23, 2023. Once established, the eligible list generated from the test will remain in place for 18 months.  Historically, the City has hired multiple classes of officers from an eligibility list over that period.

Candidates must meet several baseline qualifications to be eligible, including:

  • 20.5 - 45 years old by the application closing date (March 9, 2023)
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver’s license
Candidates must pass written tests, a physical fitness test, a background investigation and a polygraph examination. Final selection is contingent upon passage of a medical and psychological evaluation after receiving a conditional job offer. The City of Akron also awards bonus points to those candidates who pass the written test and meet a residency requirement, have served in active duty in the armed forces of the United States for more than 180 days and were honorably discharged, and/or completed accredited college course work.

Compensation for an entry level police officer begins at $30.61 per hour ($63,668.80 annually) and includes a generous benefits package consisting of medical and prescription coverage, dental and vision insurance, life insurance at no cost, paid vacation time, sick leave and paid holidays. For the first time, new Akron police officers are also eligible for a $2,000 sign-on bonus.
