Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes, who represents Ohio’s 13th district in the U.S. Congress, marked several significant observances and local issues in a series of posts on September 15, 2025.
In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Sykes wrote, "Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! We are celebrating the rich and vibrant culture of Hispanic communities across #OH13 and recognizing their invaluable contributions to our history and society." (September 15, 2025).
Later that day, she addressed transportation concerns in Northeast Ohio: "For years now, Rep. Sykes and Northeast Ohio leaders have been advocating for a passenger rail stop in the Akron-Canton Region. The fact that the Ohio Department of Transportation is still not making this a priority is insulting." (September 15, 2025).
Sykes also observed POW/MIA Recognition Day by stating her commitment to supporting efforts to account for missing service members: "On POW/MIA Recognition Day, Rep. Sykes honors those Americans who were prisoners of war, and those who haven't come home. Rep. Sykes is committed to supporting the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency in its continued search for missing soldiers, to keep the promise to" (September 15, 2025).
Sykes has represented Ohio’s 13th District since replacing Tim Ryan in Congress in 2023. Before her tenure in Congress, she served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2015 to 2022. Born in Akron in 1986 and currently residing there, Sykes holds degrees from Kent State University and the University of Florida.
