Akron, Ohio — On June 2, the City of Akron’s Public Art Commission announced they are seeking 4 new commissioners. They are accepting applications now through noon on Friday, June 23, 2023. Chosen applicants will be expected to serve a 2 or 3 year term. Please review description of the commission’s mission and duties here: Commissioners — City of Akron Public Art Program.

The Public Art Commission was established in 2020 to oversee the budget, strategy, collection, and administration of the Plan for Public Art. The Commission is dedicated to celebrating the cultural vitality of the people of Akron and promoting economic vibrancy throughout Akron through the integration of high-quality artwork in public places.

The Commission is made up of nine volunteer members, all appointed by the Mayor and approved by Akron City Council. The Commission currently meets virtually once a month. There are occasionally some in-person events commissioners are expected to attend.

The Public Art Commission has the following responsibilities:

  • Act principally in an advisory capacity to City of Akron staff and the City in any matter pertaining to public art
  • Present an annual report of Commission activities
  • Advise and make recommendations to the City pertaining to, among other things, policies and procedures as identified in the Administrative Guide; artist selection juries and process; commission and placement of artworks; and maintenance and removal of artworks
The Commission is seeking 4 diverse residents of Akron who have an interest in art and a passion for their community. The commission is seeking representation from the following areas of expertise and interest: a thespian, an artist representing areas that are not currently on the commission, a resident who has a love for art, and a person younger than 30 interested in the study of art who plans to remain in Akron throughout their term on the commission. They are also looking to include more representation on the commission from residents in the following wards: 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 or 10.

High Street, Suite 202, Akron, OH 44308, attention Summer Hall, no later than noon, Friday, June 23, 2023. There is no fee to apply. Submissions after the deadline will not be considered.
