Akron, Ohio — On June 1, Mayor Horrigan hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completed renovations at Firestone Stadium (1575 Firestone Pkwy.) The renovations included upgrades to 4 restrooms, new HVAC for the entire structure, painting inside the building, renovation of the concession areas, installation of LED lighting throughout the stadium, and a new perimeter fence. The city also installed 2 new artificial turf fields utilizing FieldTurf’s Triple Threat Natural Turf. The upgrades mark a $1.47M investment into the future of the stadium and Akron’s young athletes.

“Firestone Stadium has such a rich history in this community that dates back nearly 100 years,” said Mayor Horrigan. “This investment means that we can continue to provide outstanding accommodations to our area’s athletes for many more years to come.”

Other speakers at today’s event included Ward 7 Councilperson Donnie Kammer, Senior Vice President Product Development from Bridgestone Americas Dr. Hans Dorfi, and Executive Director of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Doug Ute.

The City of Akron and Akron Recreation and Parks have been hosting the Girl's State Softball Championships since 2008 at Firestone Stadium and this year’s tournament kicked off today with the Johnstown Johnnies facing off against the Indian Lake Lakers.

Firestone Stadium was built in 1925 by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for company baseball. It was dedicated on July 25, 1925, by Harvey S. Firestone, the founder of the company. It was owned and operated by the Firestone company until it was donated to the City of Akron in 1988.  It has been home to many teams through the years including the Cleveland Comets, Akron Racers, and Ohio Pride and it has hosted some of the best players of all time, including Babe Ruth who once hit at least one homer out of the stadium during an exhibition game.

All Contractors involved with the project include: FieldTurf, Vasco, Fence Enterprises, Pro Door and Security, Wims Painting and Lawn Service, Majesticoat Epoxy Flooring, Akron Cultured Marble, Kane Painting and Spanky’s Flooring. A special thank you to Kenmore Construction and owner Bill Scala for the donation of labor and equipment for site preparation and grading.
