WASHINGTON, D.C. — On April 19, U.S. Representative Emilia Strong Sykes (OH-13) voted against H.J. Res 42, legislation that weakens public safety in communities by nullifying D.C. Council’s recently passed “Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act.” The Act permanently extends the temporary law enforcement transparency and accountability measures that D.C. passed after the murder of George Floyd.

“All Americans deserve to feel safe in their communities. Unfortunately, H.J. Res. 42 is simply a partisan scare tactic that does nothing to prevent crimes before they happen or improve public safety,” said Rep. Sykes. “Communities should have the ability to implement measures that keep people safe, including community-focused policing that holds law enforcement officers accountable to the citizens they are sworn to protect and serve. I strongly support evidence-based solutions that will keep the people of Ohio’s 13th District and across the nation safe from violence.”
