Three members of the Kent State gymnastics team have earned spots in the NCAA Regionals. Rachel DeCavitch, Karlie Franz and Alyssa Guns will represent the Golden Flashes at the Norman Regional in Norman, Okla. from Wednesday, March 29 through Saturday, April 1. All three Flashes will compete in Session I on March 30 at 2 p.m.
Franz and Guns will showcase their floor routines at the NCAA Regional and DeCavitch will compete in the all-around. All three gymnasts earned All-Mid-American Conference Second Team honors prior to Saturday's MAC Championships.
DeCavitch tallied an all-around NQS of 39.300, the third-highest mark in the conference. The senior led the Flashes in total points and boasts a team-high NQS on bars (9.850) and beam (9.840). At the MAC Championships, DeCavitch placed second in the all-around competition with a 39.450, which set a new career high. She also tied for second on bars (9.925) and beam (9.875), earning a spot on the MAC All-Tournament Team. This will mark DeCavitch's third appearance at Regionals in her career, as she competed individually in the all-around at Auburn a year ago and helped lead the Flashes to a fourth-place finish in 2021 in Morgantown.
Guns and Franz have both shined on floor throughout season, anchoring the Flashes' lineup. Guns ranks third in the MAC with an NQS of 9.910, followed closely by Franz's 9.905, which ranks fourth in the conference. At the MAC Championships, the two tied for fourth in the event with a team-high 9.900 each. Franz has eclipsed the 9.9+ mark on seven of her eight routines this year, including a career-high 9.925 twice against both Northern Illinois and Central Michigan. Guns scored 9.90 or higher six times on floor in 2023, highlighted by a 9.950 at Ohio State, which was season-high for the sophomore and the highest by any Flash this season. Franz will also be making her third appearance at an NCAA Regional, while Guns has now earned a postseason berth as an individual in both of her collegiate seasons.
The NCAA National Gymnastics Championships will be held in Fort Worth, Texas on April 13-15. The championship event is hosted by Texas Woman's University.
