Kent State made its first six shots from three-point range en route to an 82-61 win at Northern Illinois on Wednesday night, its largest margin of victory on the road against a Mid-American Conference opponent since March 1, 2017.
Graduate student Lindsey Thall torched the nets with five triples and scored a season-high 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Junior Casey Santoro and senior Clare Kelly finished with 13 points each and freshman Corynne Hauser scored 12 points. Santoro added a season-high eight rebounds, four assists and had both of the team's steals.
The Golden Flashes (12-6, 4-3 MAC) made four of their first five shots to open an 11-4 lead just over three minutes into the contest. Kent State shot 6-of-7 from behind the three-point arc and led by as many as 15 before finishing the first quarter ahead by a score of 27-13.
The Huskies started draining shots in the second period and cut their deficit to four at the 4:14 mark. Hauser converted a traditional three-point play on the ensuing possession and Kent State closed the half with a 14-3 run to push the lead back to 15 at the half.
The Flashes held NIU to 3-of-14 shooting in the third quarter but were called for seven fouls to help their host play an even 10 minutes.
Leading by 12 with less than six minutes remaining, Kent State pulled away with an 11-3 run, as both teams emptied their benches with nearly three minutes on the clock.
Kent State returns home to the M.A.C. Center for the annual Legacy Game on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m.
