Mayor Horrigan Appoints Tammy Tucker As Akron’s First Director Of Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion

Today, Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan announced the appointment of Tammy Tucker as the City’s first Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Tammy began her new role on Nov. 7, 2022. Prior to joining the City, Ms. Tucker served as the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for The Ohio State University’s College of Medicine.

In her new role, Ms. Tucker will focus on implementing the Racial Equity and Social Justice Strategic Plan and building equity through community relationships. She will help promote a more diverse, centralized, inclusive work environment for all employees by accelerating the City’s efforts around race, gender, disability, and other protected class equity goals. Part of her role will include creating accountability mechanisms and ensuring regular reporting to policy makers. Ms. Tucker will develop and adapt a strategic DEI framework which incorporates DEI principles into the city’s operations, programs, services and policies.

“I’m beyond excited to welcome Tammy to our team,” said Mayor Horrigan. “Improving Akron’s DEI efforts, both internally and externally, has been a focus of my administration from the start, and bringing in someone who can devote the bulk of their time and attention to these increasingly important objectives will be critical to our progress. Tammy brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role, and I know she is ready for the work ahead.”

“I am humbled by the vote of confidence entrusted by Mayor Horrigan to serve as the inaugural Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the City of Akron,” said Tammy Tucker. “The work the Racial Equity Social Justice Taskforce has outlined is encouraging as it addresses our most vulnerable places. I am empowered to create authentic sustainable brave spaces for practices, policies, and procedures that focus on the humanity of all.”

Ms. Tucker holds a Master’s of Education as an Administrative Specialist and a Bachelor’s in English Literature, both from Central State University. She has previously served at The Ohio State University, Ohio University, Cuyahoga Community College, and Central State University.

In her most recent work as the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for The Ohio State University’s College of Medicine, she was instrumental in impacting student support, having crucial conversations, facilitating implicit bias mitigation and upstanding/bystander training to undergraduate and graduate medical school learners. Her work ensured that every incoming learner completed Implicit Bias Mitigation Training and could complete the Diversity Council's DEI Certificate. Before that position, Tammy was the Director of TRIO Student Support Services at Ohio University where she focused on students who identified as first generation, limited income, or with a disability, empowering them to obtain their bachelor’s degrees. At Cuyahoga Community College and Central State University she also served in TRIO, ensuring high school students were exposed to college rigor, ACT preparation, and college admissions through the Upward Bound Program.

In addition to education, Ms. Tucker has a long civil service history of working for Welfare reform with Jobs and Family Services in Franklin and Cuyahoga Counties, prison reentry within Cuyahoga County, workforce investment with the City of Cleveland, and racial reconciliation in the Episcopal Church.

Ms. Tucker is also the mother of three adult daughters and is an avid writer and published poet.  She enjoys playing tennis, reading, and cooking for family and church functions.
