Akron Art Museum issued the following announcement on Oct 25.
I have always been an avid collector of bits and pieces of everyday moments and memories. I often find myself saving old packaging stickers or postage stamps, tags, advertisements, etc. because I see their potential to be or become art. Most of my work is about the piecing together of identity by absorbing what we see around us and repurposing it to fit our own needs and ways of expression. Something with a previous purpose can soon become a part of you in a way you never imagined. In thinking about identity, I like to utilize these scraps that I collect to add balance and meaning, or to generally inform the work that I make.
In pieces like this, I find myself drawn to the way objects layer up and overlap to create movement not only with materials, but with the figure as well. These seemingly minute interactions between material and figure are what keep me motivated to navigate and finish a piece. Some of the materials I incorporate here are tracing paper, acrylic paint, graphite, embroidery, pen and cardboard in order to reach my desired composition.
