17

City of Green issued the following announcement on March 2

The City of Green is proud to partner with GGLeagues, an online esports league platform, to offer Esports starting April 2022. The City will offer three seasons this year each including a playoff, chance to win prizes, and chance to qualify for the national esports series. Residents may access all supported games by purchasing the esports seasonal pass for $40. The first season runs April 18 through June 10. Participants must register prior to the start of the season.

In 2022, Green will offer a spring, summer, and fall season. The spring season runs from April 18 to June 10; summer season runs from July 11 to September 2; and the fall season will run from October 3 to November 25. The top players from each season will qualify for the National Esports Series to represent the City of Green! Participants will be able to connect with players in their age category from the City of Green and surrounding communities. Age groups include 8-12 year-olds, 12 – 17 year-olds and 18+. All gaming levels are welcome. League competition is currently available for Rocket League, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Madden 22, Fortnite, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Esports is a safe way for children/teens to participate in competitive gaming. Esports not only is a way for friends to play video games together, but it is also a way for players to learn valuable skills. Participating in esports will equip players with skills like time management, critical thinking, teamwork, strong communication, and leadership. Additionally, GGLeagues has trained support administrators and referees who will be present to monitor play, enforce rules, and ensure the safety of all players.

Esports can offer players educational benefits as well. Schools are beginning to invest in esports across the country in the high school and collegiate level. Many universities today will offer scholarships based on talent to players. In 2019, $15 million was awarded in esports scholarships to top preforming players.

Aside from the educational benefits, esports also opened many jobs and careers in online gaming. These careers include but are not limited to broadcasting, marketing, journalism, physical health & wellness, partnership works, coding & game development, video game arts, music, event management, coaching, team management, and graphic design.
