City Of Akron Activates Warming Centers Friday And Saturday

City of Akron issued the following announcement on Feb. 1

 Today, Mayor Horrigan announced that on Friday, February 4 and Saturday, February 5, the City of Akron will once again extend hours in four community centers to provide warming centers for residents who are in need. All other City of Akron community centers will be open during their normal business hours and anyone can come in during those times as well to warm up.

The following centers will be open between the hours of 8:30 AM and 10:00 PM, February 4 – 5:

COVID -19 precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of visitors and employees. These provisions include:

  • Limited attendance based on maximum occupancy of the facility rooms.
  • Stay in family groups.
  • Use social distancing and maintain at least six feet between individuals in all areas of the facility.
  • Wear a mask or face covering while in the facility. If a visitor has a temperature or exhibits signs of illness, the visitor will immediately be referred to an EMT for off-site medical attention.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the facility including the entrance and exit areas.
  • Community center spaces will be cleaned and sanitized
The City will continue to monitor for continuous frigid temperatures and will extend community center hours as necessary. Unless otherwise specified, the centers will return to their normal business hours starting Sunday, February 6, 2022.

The Emergency Overnight Shelter located at 111 East Voris St. will be open both Friday and Saturday night from 7pm-8am.

The Emergency Overnight Shelter is a community partnership between The Peter Maurin Center, Summit County Continuum of Care, and Community Support Services and provides food, shelter, and clothing. You can find more information about their services at https://www.akronemergencyshelter.org/.
