Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes, U.S. Congresswoman representing Ohio’s 13th district, addressed a range of issues in a series of posts on October 19 and 20, 2025, including domestic violence legislation, the impact of the government shutdown on first responders, and holiday greetings to her constituents.
On October 19, Sykes announced the reintroduction of legislation focused on supporting survivors of domestic violence. She stated, “Rep. Sykes reintroduced the Safer Homes and Families Legislative Agenda to help survivors of domestic violence leave a hard situation, and ensure that they have the support they need once they do. Congress must act to protect survivors.”
Later that day, Sykes addressed the ongoing government shutdown and its effects on local emergency services. She wrote, “Local first responders rely on federal funds that they can’t access right now, because of the government shutdown. Republicans must put partisan politics aside and reopen the government to ensure governments and organizations at every level have the funds and resources they”.
On October 20, Sykes shared holiday wishes with Ohioans, posting, “Wishing all Ohioans a joyous Deepavali. May your holiday be filled with joy and light!”
Sykes has served in Congress since 2023, after replacing Tim Ryan as representative for Ohio’s 13th district. Prior to her congressional service, she was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2015 to 2022. Born in Akron, Ohio in 1986, Sykes is an alumna of Kent State University and holds a law degree from the University of Florida.
