Rep. Emilia Strong Sykes, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Ohio’s 13th district since 2023, has criticized House Republicans for their handling of an impending government shutdown in a series of posts on September 30, 2025.

In her first post at 16:21 UTC, Sykes wrote, “Republicans control every level of the federal government, and rather than working to avoid a government shutdown, House Republicans have skipped town with no resolution in sight. Rep. Sykes is ready to work with anyone to keep the government open and keep healthcare costs low”.

Later that day at 19:42 UTC, she posted, “House Democrats are in Washington, ready to avert a government shutdown. House Republicans went home without even trying.”

At 21:25 UTC on the same day, Sykes added another statement: “Instead of meeting the needs of seniors, veterans, and families, Republicans in Congress have chosen to leave town and shut down the government.

Rep. Sykes introduced the Pay Our Military Act to ensure pay continues to our service men and women during a government shutdown and”.

Sykes has served as U.S. Representative for Ohio’s 13th District since replacing Tim Ryan in 2023. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2015 through 2022. Born in Akron in 1986 and currently residing there at age 37, Sykes holds degrees from Kent State University (BA) and the University of Florida (JD).

The situation described by Sykes comes amid ongoing debates within Congress regarding funding legislation necessary to prevent a lapse in federal operations.
