U.S. Representative Emilia Strong Sykes, who represents Ohio’s 13th district in Congress, addressed several legislative and policy issues on her social media account this week.
On March 18, 2026, Sykes criticized Republican lawmakers for their approach to immigration reform and expressed support for federal employees affected by ongoing disputes. She wrote: “The hardworking employees of the Coast Guard, TSA, and FEMA shouldn’t have to continue working without pay because Republicans refuse to institute common-sense reforms for immigration enforcement. I am proud to sign this discharge petition with my @HouseDemocrats colleagues”.
Later that day, Sykes commented on foreign policy concerning Iran’s oil sales and sanctions enforcement. In a post dated March 18, 2026, she stated: “Iran should not be able to profit from illicit oil sales while continuing to destabilize the region. I’m proud to be a cosponsor of the Enhanced Iran Sanctions Act, which ensures sanctions are fully enforced and holds accountable those who help the regime evade them.”
On March 19, 2026, Sykes joined other Ohio representatives in commemorating three state residents who died in the war in Iran. She posted: “I joined my Ohio colleagues today for a moment of silence to honor the three Ohioans who lost their lives as a result of the war in Iran: Captain Seth Koval, Captain Curtis Angst, and Technical Sergeant Tyler Simmons. Their loss has been felt deeply across our state. May we”.
Sykes began representing Ohio’s 13th congressional district after replacing Tim Ryan in 2023. Prior to her tenure in Congress, she served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2015 through 2022. Born in Akron in 1986 and currently residing there at age 37, Sykes is an alumna of Kent State University and holds a law degree from the University of Florida.
