U.S. Representative Emilia Strong Sykes, who serves Ohio’s 13th district, has recently addressed several national issues through her social media posts, focusing on government shutdowns, food insecurity, and gender pay inequality.
On March 25, 2026, Sykes criticized the ongoing closure of the Department of Homeland Security by stating: “The fact that DHS has been fully shut down for more than a month is a lack of leadership and a failure to the American public. On March 26, Sykes addressed workplace inequality and the gender pay gap: “Women are underpaid and undervalued. This year, the gender pay gap has widened—again.
On #EqualPayDay and every day, my @DemWomenCaucus colleagues and I will continue to fight for fair wages, opportunity, and equality for all women in the workplace.”
Sykes succeeded Tim Ryan as representative of Ohio’s 13th district in 2023 after serving in the Ohio House of Representatives from 2015 to 2022. She was born in Akron in 1986 and continues to reside there at age 37. Sykes earned her undergraduate degree from Kent State University and holds a law degree from the University of Florida.
